Spanish mackerel tend to show up in Maryland waters in August and will usually stay until early in October. These fish are known best by the brown spots along their length as well as their razor-sharp teeth. They are very much like bluefish in this regard, and will often be found mixed in with schools of bluefish. Like the bluefish and the rockfish, the Spanish mackerel also feeds on herring, menhaden, and other small fish. They also prefer the warmer waters as they tend to migrate south of Mexico, only coming up as far as New England under very warm conditions. Although Spanish mackerel caught in some places have been as big as 11 pounds, the ones caught in Maryland waters typically range between 2 and 4 pounds. Like the bluefish, the most efficient method of fishing for them is by trolling with spoons and rubber tube lures. However, using live bait or chum to fish for them can also yield a catch. |
