Bluefish

Five-pound bluefish from Maryland's Chesapeake Bay!

Bluefish are well-known for being one of the most exciting species to fish for. For their weight, they put on the best fight of all of the fish caught in Maryland. Bluefish can be found all over the world, but mostly in tropical climates with warm water. They've been caught as far north as Canada, and as far south as Argentina. They are also fished for in Africa and the Mediterranean regions. They have razor-sharp teeth, so you must be careful when handling these fish and removing your hook. In size, bluefish are anywhere from just a few ounces to over forty pounds. In Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, they usually range between two and five pounds.

In Maryland, the fishing action for bluefish is usually best when the weather is hot and the water is calm, so the summer months of June, July, and August are best, though they do tend to stay around through October. The most efficient method of fishing for bluefish is trolling with four to six lines, using spoons or rubber tube lures. Bluefish generally swim in schools of similar sized fish, so it is not uncommon to have several lines hook up at a time when trolling. Live-lining and chumming are also exciting methods of catching bluefish.

In spite of popular belief, bluefish caught in Maryland are actually good eating as long as they are iced down and eaten fresh. Their reputation as a poor-tasting fish was earned decades ago when 20 and 30-pound bluefish were caught in the Chesapeake Bay. These fish were very oily, and as such, tasted "too much like fish." The two to five-pound variety however, are not as oily and are as good to eat as any other species around. The important thing to remember about bluefish is to keep them iced down and cold. If they are not iced down properly, they will get soft and mushy and will not be good to eat.
