Point Lookout Light
Point Lookout Lighthouse is situated on land at the mouth of the Potomac river, in the town of Scotland, Maryland in St. Mary's County. It was first lit in 1830, with the purpose of marking the entrance to the Potomac river. The lighthouse used a Fresnel lens, which was installed in 1854. A fog bell tower was added in 1873, along with a second story in 1882. The lighthouse was maintained by civilian personnel until it was deactivated in 1965, when it was turned over to the Navy. The fog bell tower is no longer there, as it was removed and taken to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in 1968. The State of Maryland took over the lighthouse in 2006. |
