Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report: July 11, 2016
This was the first Chesapeake Bay fishing charter that we have taken with these guys. As you can see, it was pretty successful! We had 13 people in all in our group for today. Not all of them wanted to be in the above picture, posing with their fish, but they caught their limit of Chesapeake Bay Maryland rockfish in pretty short order! We're still using light tackle to fish for these striped bass on the bay. As soon as we pulled in and dropped anchor, we started getting hook-ups almost instantly! It didn't take long for 26 legal rockfish to be caught. A bunch of smaller fish were caught in the process, providing plenty of action for this gang! Check out the cooler shot in the picture below! We have a bunch of available dates for anyone who has a group and wants to try this type of fishing, especially if you can go during the week!

Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report: June 24, 2016
It was another fantastic day of Chesapeake Bay fishing action aboard the Sawyer! We caught these rockfish today with light tackle and fresh bunker for bait! Even though the current on the Chesapeake Bay was running really hard, the fish were biting as soon as we arrived! Not only did this crew limit out on Maryland striped bass, but they also caught a bunch of smaller ones that had to be thrown back. It was an action-packed afternoon! The biggest fish that was caught today clocked in at 30 inches!

Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report: June 18, 2016
Today, we took this fine crew out light tackle fishing for striped bass on the Chesapeake Bay! For the first time in the last few years, we caught these fish by chumming, as opposed to trolling or any other method. These guys had a blast! It took awhile before the fish started to bite, but once they did, we couldn't keep them off the lines! These fish were all between 20 and 25 inches in length, which provided a good fight on spinning reels with 20-pound test line! It was a fun-filled afternoon of excitement!

Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report: June 1, 2016
We had a GREAT charter today on the Chesapeake Bay! We had a small group this morning, and once we got our lines in the water, it didn't take long to catch our legal limit of Chesapeake Bay rockfish! It was action-packed from start to finish! The striped bass caught today were a bit on the smaller side, ranging between 20 and 26 inches, but they were fat and healthy! With that said, there are still reports of bigger fish being caught. We have all next week open for anyone who wants to go! Give us a call at (410) 397-3743!

Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report: May 12, 2016
Over the past few days, the fishing action on the Chesapeake Bay has been pretty slow, with catches averaging about 2-3 rockfish per trip, with it taking all day to catch that. Well, today was quite a departure from that! These four guys landed their legal limit of trophy Chesapeake Bay striped bass by 7am this morning! We caught three of these BIG fish before we could even get all of our lines out! Unlike the past few days, the fish were waiting for us today! Hopefully, this action on the Chesapeake Bay will continue! Right now, we are open for both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. If you have a group that wants to go this weekend, give us a call at (410) 397-3743! |
Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report: May 4, 2016
Here is another group of guys that have been fishing with us for a long time. They've been fishing on the Chesapeake Bay with us since 2008, and when it comes to trolling for rockfish, they generally have a lot of luck. Today was no different! While the fishing wasn't as red-hot as it was yesterday, it was still one heck of a day for these guys! Instead of catching numerous fish at one time like yesterday, we caught one at a time throughout the day until this group of six limited out. That's the way it goes sometimes! Hopefully, this good Chesapeake Bay fishing action will keep up! |
Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report: May 3, 2016
Last night, we almost cancelled this trip due to a weather report that called for over two inches of rain between last night and today! Thank goodness we didn't do that! The rain never happened this morning, and the fishing was wide open! We started catching fish before we could finish getting our lines out! By 8am, we had caught four BIG Chesapeake Bay rockfish to round out a full legal limit for the day! All of these fish were at least 40 inches long, with the biggest coming in at 43 inches! While we were trying to pull our lines up, we landed five more that had to be thrown back. These guys have been fishing on the Chesapeake Bay with us for many years now, and always seem to have a lot of luck. What an amazing day on the Chesapeake Bay! |
Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report:
May 1, 2016
Today, a longtime customer decided to take some of his family fishing on the Chesapeake Bay. It turned out to be a great decision! All four of them went home with BIG Chesapeake Bay rockfish! Even though it rained most of the time and it was foggy for most of the morning, the fish were not deterred, as these guys landed a legal limit. One of the guys in the group said that it was the first rockfish that he had ever caught! Hopefully, it won't be his last! |
Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report:
April 30, 2016
The fishing was a bit challenging today due to an increase in boat traffic from an annual fishing tournament that was held this weekend. However, that did not stop this crew from bringing home four monster Chesapeake Bay striped bass! All of these fish were more than 40 inches long! It turned out to be a great day on the water! |
Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report:
April 29, 2016
Here, we have a crew that came to see us for the first time today, and they did not go home empty-handed! We left Hoopers Island bright and early, and then proceeded to land these four beautiful rockfish before heading in for the day! This was their first time seeing us, and hopefully will be the first of several Chesapeake Bay fishing charters that we see these guys on! |

Capt. Dave Schauber is a native to Maryland's Eastern Shore. He has fished on the Chesapeake Bay his entire life. From the late 1970s to the late 1990s, he operated sawmills for a living. After relocating to Dorchester County in 1981 to operate another sawmill, he quickly became known in the community as simply "The Sawyer", and is still referred to by that title to this day. It is often confused with his last name. This is the origin of the business name, and hence the boat name. After moving to Dorchester County, he fished the lower and middle Chesapeake Bay, in addition to the Honga River, Fishing Bay, and other local bodies of water for years. He started out with small, center-console boats and worked his way up to eventually owning a 42-foot Bay-built vessel. He obtained his Captain's License in 1992, and began to run fishing charters on the weekends and his days off. After building his business for several years, he made the decision to leave the sawmill and begin running charters full time in 1999. His business continued to grow, leading to the construction of our new boat in 2002. |
