Menhaden
|
Atlantic menhaden, also known as alewives, bunkers, or fat backs are used frequently as bait and are also ground into chum for catching bluefish, striped bass, and other types of fish. They are also used quite often as bait in the harvest of the Chesapeake Bay blue crab. These fish are very bony and oily, so much so that they deteriorate rapidly in the sun. Because of their composition, they are also used in the production of fish meal, oil, and fertilizer. Menhaden are known as filter-feeding fish. They filter the water as they consume plankton. It is said that adult menhaden can filter up to four gallons of water per minute. This is important in maintaining the quality of surrounding waters. These fish can be found up and down the Atlantic seaboard, from Canada to Florida, usually swimming in large schools. |
